Did you know, according to UN trade and development experts (UNCTAD), the share of retail sales saw a drastic rise from 16 percent to 20 percent in 2020? Yes, you read that right. Also, recently, UNCTAD revealed that B2C sales for the world’s top thirteen companies now stands at $2.9 trillion as of 2020. And this has a lot to do with the spread of the virus around us.

The eCommerce sector is seeing a constant boom ever since the pandemic started. The dangerous virus had put everything to a standstill, but when it came to shopping, people had nowhere to go except going digital. Also, with this, people felt a sense of security and safety for themselves.

Know the Stats

You must be willing to know the exact percentage of the spike in digital sales in different regions. Here are the statistics for you to know:

  • So, within the same period, the increase in online transactions in the UK jumped from 15.8 percent to 23.3 percent.
  • China saw a rise of nearly four percent as it rose from 20.7 percent to 24.9 percent.
  • Also, the US stands at 14 percent from 11 percent.
  • Furthermore, Singapore saw a major six percent spike as it is now at 11.7 percent.
  • Similarly, online transactions in countries like Canada and Australia rose to nearly three percent as they are at 6.2 and 9.4 percent, respectively.

Shamika Sirimanne, UNCTAD’s director of technology and logistics, said, These statistics show the growing importance of online activities. She further added, “They also point to the need for countries, especially developing ones, to have such information as they rebuild their economies in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
